Selection Process
The recruitment process combines a computer-based examination with a qualifying practical or trade assessment.
| Stage | What Candidates Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Computer-Based Test (CBT) | Candidates appear for the prescribed written examination |
| Skill/Trade Test Shortlisting | Shortlisting is in a 1:5 ratio based on CBT merit |
| Skill/Trade or Computer Proficiency Test | Candidates must qualify in the applicable test |
| Merit List | Prepared unit-wise, trade-wise and category-wise using CBT marks |
| Document Verification | Eligibility, qualification and supporting records are checked |
| Medical Examination | Pre-employment medical examination and other prescribed verification apply |
Only candidates who qualify in the applicable Skill Test will be considered for final selection. Final merit is based on CBT marks; Skill Test marks are not added to the merit score.
CBT Exam Pattern and Qualifying Marks
The Computer-Based Test contains two sections and has no negative marking.
| Exam Component | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Section I – Professional Knowledge in the Relevant Trade | 100 | 100 |
| Section II – General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning, Numerical Ability and English | 50 | 50 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
| Examination Detail | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-Based Test |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Correct Answer | 1 mark |
| Negative Marking | None |

Minimum Qualifying Marks
Candidates must meet the minimum qualifying percentage separately in each section.
| Category | Minimum Marks in Each Section |

| SC / ST / OBC-NCL | 45% |
A sufficient combined score alone is not enough if the candidate fails to meet the minimum requirement in either section.
The detailed advertisement identifies the broad examination subjects but does not provide a separate chapter-wise technical syllabus. Preparation should therefore follow the relevant trade and the examination instructions issued by IREL.

The CBT is tentatively planned at the following cities. Candidates may select two preferred examination centres, but the examination authority may allot or change centres according to administrative requirements.
